Social, Environmental &
Economic Justice
We face a tough challenge: Creating a City that nurtures people, protects our health and safety, restores natural systems we rely on, and includes everyone in the decisions that impact our lives and those of future generations. My lifelong goal has been to lead a more sustainable life: through my work, my personal choices, my civic engagement, and through volunteering to help others.
PERSONAL: Backyard Habitat Gold Certification, riding my bike for transportation, shopping at our local food co-op, eating vegetarian since I read Frances Moore Lappe’s Diet for a Small Planet, and helping out and sharing baked goods with our neighbors.
POLITICAL: bicycle advocate (co-founder of Bicycle Transportation Alliance), social justice (co-founder of Coalition for A Livable Future), led successful effort to fund Outdoor School for All, worked on M114 (anti-gun violence) and M110 (decriminalize addiction).
PROFESSIONAL: First job in Portland was with the first home recycling pickup service. As Metro Councilor (2001-13), passed first climate-responsive Regional Transportation Plan, led affordable housing efforts, part of passing 3 Natural Areas bond measures, opening thousands of acres of natural areas and parks, and facilitated job opportunities for immigrants and refugees at Metro facilities.
My business clients include Portland Audubon – now Bird Alliance of Oregon; Forest Park Conservancy; Unite Oregon; Outdoor School for All-Washington; State Forests Trust; Salmonberry Trail Foundation; Portland Gay Men’s Chorus,
CIVIC VOLUNTEERISM: Giving back is important. Currently board member of Unite Oregon Action, and board chair of Mt St Helens Institute and Oregon Sustainability Board. Past member of Oregon Global Warming Commission, Global Ambassador for Ciclovias Recreativas de las Americas, Rail~Volution, and many others. Pull weeds and plant natives for Weed Warriors, Wilderness Volunteers, and Friends of Trees.
REX
Stands for Sustainability
A note from Rex regarding Issue Pages: I committed at the beginning of my race for City Council to listen, to study, and to deeply think about the many issues that confront our community. While like everyone else, I had a lot of opinions and thoughts about these issues, I don’t believe it serves our City or contributes much to the quality of the discussion to take positions without doing the work to understand first. My website has appeared to be a little thin to some people. This is deliberate. As I learn more, talk with more people, I will share what I learn and am thinking about these issues. Thanks for your patience.
